NYFW For First Timers

NYFW For First Timers

New York Fashion Week filled me with inspiration!

It has been a dream of mine for a long time to attend New York Fashion Week. Between my love of fashion and New York City as a whole it was something I knew I wanted to experience. I didn’t really know what to expect so I was very grateful for the fact that I was going with my dear friend, April Cossey. She has been numerous times before and is a fellow blogger so I was excited to have her as my NYFW guide. You can check her out over on The Stylish Investor, she has an amazing sense of style and is an all around inspiration!

We arrived Friday afternoon and to say we were excited would be an understatement! We had tickets to see different shows everyday while we were there. Our first one was Friday night so we hit the ground running once in NYC. This is where my education of Fashion Week started and my first tip for any first timers begins.

  • Have your schedule planned out.
    There are SOOO many shows happening all over the city. Give yourself extra time to get in between shows. NYC is already a busy city and what looks like it will take 10 min could very well take 45 min to get from one spot to the next. It honestly felt like I spent most of the first day riding around in a Lyft.
    Also there are a mix of shows, some are strictly invite only, some you can request media tickets for, while others are open for the public to purchase tickets. I honestly didn’t know you could purchase tickets for shows until I was there. However the tickets you can purchase won’t be to the big designer shows, those are strictly invite only.

  • Have fun with your outfits!
    When I first found out that I was going to Fashion Week I was slightly intimidated. I found myself second guessing my style and wondering if I had bit off more than I was ready for. That nervousness could of easily scared me off if I let it, but instead I took the challenge head on and I love what I ended up coming up with. I felt the outfits I chose stretched my styling muscles, while still staying true to me!
    Fashion week is the perfect time to try fun, more out there styles that you are interested in. You will see all sorts of outfits while you are there ranging from street style (my personal favorite) to high fashion (so glamorous). It definitely takes some planning though and I do not recommend waiting until two weeks before to start figuring it all out. Take your time and find some new brands that you can possibly collaborate with or try out. Fashion week is great exposure for everyone and it is the perfect time to try some new trends.

The shows really are magical.

  • Document, Network, && Share!
    Saturday was our busiest day by far! We spent the day at Pier 59 where we attended 3 shows back to back. These were my favorite and truly magical if you ask me. We had some great seats so it made it easy to take videos and pictures to share it on the gram (make sure to tag the designers, they love seeing their work shared). This is also a great networking tool. Simply by sharing I was able to connect with two designers and a photographer. The designers just so happened to be two of my favorites from the day and I am excited to stay connected with them and support them as they continue to create!

  • Make sure to schedule some down time to just have fun!
    NYC has so much to see and do, as well as lot’s of amazing food and shopping! I am always about the food when I travel, haha. April and I made sure to eat our fair share of NY style pizza, and I had to get my coffee shop fix as well.
    If you’ve never been to the city before then make sure to take the time to do some research and find all the spots that you want to see before you get there. You won’t be able to do everything in one trip but thats okay because that means you get to come back! I am going to be posting another blog covering all our NYFW spots/recommendations, so make sure to check that out!

When Monday came I was sad for it all to be over. At the same time I felt like I had learned so much, and that it was a success! I feel way more prepared so I will be ready for next time! I loved how it has pushed me to grow in my own personal style as well as connected me with some truly amazing and talented individuals. I am super excited for next year, because April and I are definitely planning on coming back! If you have any other questions about Fashion Week, feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer them for you!

As Always,
