Weekend In Wilmington
Wilmington is an amazing city with a little something for everyone! Whether you prefer to spend your days lounging at Wrightsville beach, exploring The University of North Carolina Wilmington and hanging in a college town, or walking through historic downtown and riverwalk, you will find no shortage of things to do! It is a great weekend getaway where life slows down and you can just enjoy yourself.
I was just there for a girls weekend and our main objective was to enjoy the beach and all it has to offer!! We stayed at the Blockade Runner right on the beach which helped maximize our beach time since we did not have to hunt for parking. We absolutely loved staying at the Blockade Runner, the rooms were beautiful and you can get one facing the ocean or the waterway (either way you have a beautiful view outside your window). During the day we were able to rent chairs right on the beach with an umbrella ($10 a chair for the day) coming and going as we pleased. We spent most of our Saturday on the beach with the exception of a midday break up at the hotels pool side cafe where we indulged in some amazing lobster nachos and fish tacos, definitely a good choice! If you are not one to sit on the beach all day and wanted to explore more of Wrightsville beach then all you have to do is let the front desk know and they will help arrange transportation for you! We used it both nights for dinner as well as to enjoy some of the other beach spots. They also have a breakfast buffet available every morning with so many delicious breakfast options! All in all the Blockade Runner is an amazing spot to plant yourself when visiting Wilmington!
The beach is wide open and depending on where you choose to plant yourself you can be surrounded by tourist at Johnny Mercer Pier or have a relaxing day with one or two others at the far ends of the beach.
If you are one that likes to work out while you are traveling, Wrightsville beach conveniently has what the locals like to call the Loop! It is a stretch of 2.45 mile sidewalk that you will see runners, walkers, and people walking their dogs on at all times of the day.
Tower 7: Taco’s are always on the top of my list when it comes to food, and Tower 7 knows it’s tacos!! I also judge every Mexican food place by its chip and salsa and I give them two thumbs up!! I literally wanted to drink the stuff I liked it so much! Connected to Tower 7 is also a cute cafe, so you can visit in the morning on the way to the beach and get a delicious coffee or smoothy!
Oceanic: If you are looking for a nice place with a great atmosphere on the beach for dinner then Oceanic is your place! It is built off the pier with both indoor and outdoor seating as well as an amazing selection of seafood that will leave your stomach very satisfied!
Vitto’s: I don’t like to go anywhere and not know where to get pizza! If you are at Wrightsville Beach then Vitto’s has your pizza!!
Loops: Who doesn't love donuts!? That is more a rhetorical question because we all know they are delicious! So if you are looking for a ma & pop donut shop then Loops is your place! I grabbed myself a chocolate and coconut donut to enjoy while I took a morning stroll on the beach and it was fabulous!
PT’s Old Fashioned Grille: I highly recommend stopping by PT’s for a burger while you are in town! It is a local favorite and usually packed, but totally worth the wait!
Slice of Life: If you are more the downtown type then Slice of Life is where you can find your pizza as you explore downtown Wilmington and the river walk.
Kilwin’s Chocolates: While you explore downtown Wilmington you will probably smell something magical as you near the riverfront. Don’t worry your nose isn’t lying you really are smelling something magical, and it’s all the homemade fudge and waffle cones being made at Kilwins! So treat yourself and grab some treats and ice cream as you continue your stroll through town!
The University of North Carolina Wilmington
This University is growing rapidly and has a very beautiful campus! The girls I traveled with and I are alum and had to make a pit stop to see how it had changed over the years! It was still as beautiful as always with rows of brick buildings, lot’s of trees and sand on the ground! Not a bad place to spend four years for college!
With its cobblestone streets, riverwalk and unspeakable charm downtown Wilmington is a must when visiting. On Sunday we went down grabbed some ice cream and walked the waterfront where we enjoyed the outdoor market with booths selling all sorts of hand crafted items. From the waterfront you can also see the bridge you crossed while driving into town as well as the Battleship across the river (which we also recommend visiting if you have the time). There are lot’s of amazing waterfront restaurants to choose from and little shops that will keep you busy for hours! It was a great way to wrap up our weekend to Wilmington!
We hope you are as smitten in Wilmington as we were!
